The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recently given the green light for stevia to be used in food and drink applications after agreeing that the ingredient poses no health risks. The agency has granted the all-natural sweetener status as “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) after Cargill and Merisant Company achieved a process called “Self-Determination of GRAS Status”.
Steviva Brands, a Pacific Northwest company, holds the patent on a sugar substitute that boasts being the first and only “good for you” sweetener. Fructevia™ is an all-natural proprietary blend of fructose (natural sugar), fruit fiber, Stevia Rebaudiana and Magnesium Carbonate. Unlike saccharine or other common sugar substitutes, Fructevia™ could quite easily replace common table sugar without sacrificing flavor, a feat at less than 5 calories per serving. The applications are endless; anything made with sugar can be made with Fructevia™. It can be used for anything from sweetening a cup of tea or a bowl of cereal to baking and caramelizing, and since stevia is naturally twice as sweet as sugar, you only need half as much.
For over a decade, Steviva Brands has offered an array of stevia-based products such as Stevia Powder and Steviva Blend, which is stevia blended with Erythritol, an all-natural fermented grain extract. Fructevia™ is the latest addition to their product line. Its claim to be the first and only “good for you” sweetener is well founded: Fructevia™ does not affect blood sugar levels in the same way as refined sugar (sucrose), making it safe for use by those facing type I and type II diabetes restrictions. Low-carb and low-glycemic dieters, as well as those suffering from hypoglycemia, will also be able to enjoy the many benefits of Fructevia without risks to their health.
The FDA's recent approval will grant Fructevia™ a place on the shelf next to other alternative sweeteners, making it more readily accessible to the general public . With the upcoming transition of the presidential administration also comes a change in directorship at the FDA;
Steviva Brands hopes to find increased support for this all-natural alternative sweetener in the FDA's new administration.
